Paediatrician Dr Tsitsi Chawatama, with the support of Dorcas Gwata and some local staff, ran a training update with 14 local nurses and midwives on caring for unwell newborns. This training was to support babies born with low birthweight, breathing problems and infection and help save babies’ lives.
There is no specialist neonatal unit at the hospital, so midwives, paediatric nurses and family medicine nurses need these skills to be able to support critically ill babies. At the end of the training, each participant received a workbook/manual summarising the training content with access to training resources to support future training.
